Tour Description

The island of Sri Lanka, ‘the wonder of Asia’, is one of the most exotic getaways in the world. Be it any kind of holiday trip or tour, the paradise of the Indian ocean has much to offer than one can dream of. It is a 365 day sunny destination with eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites, fifteen national parks showcasing spectacular wildlife. This tour mainly focus on Trincomalee. The Trincomalee Harbour, a circular natural harbour which the temple crowns towards the north, is referred to as “Lord’s Cheek”, alluding to the cheek shape of Shiva’s bull Nandi. The Sanskrit equivalent of the port town’s harbour bay is “Cow’s Ear” and the deity’s name Gokarneswara. The ethnographer Megasthenes writing in his Indication from 350 — 290 BCE, describes the island as being divided by a long river, productive of a large number of gold and pearls in one half and that the inhabitants of this country are called Paleogoni, meaning Old Goni in Tamil and Greek, who Plinyadds worshiped Hercules and Dionysus (Bacchus) like the Pandyans of Tamilakam. The Vayu Purana, written in 300 CE specifically mentions the tallest mountain peak of the great gold and silver rich mountain range Malaya on the island, and that “to the east of this island at the shore of the sea lies a great Siva temple in a holy place called Gokarna”. Trincomalee which is a natural deep-water harbour has attracted seafarers, trader and pilgrims from Europe, Middle East, Africa, China, East Asia and Australasia since ancient times. Trinco, as it is commonly called, has been a seaport and Hindu pilgrimage center since 400 BCE. There are interesting places to visit while in Trinco, such as Fort Frederick; an old fort built by the Portuguese. Nilawali Beach is a beautiful beach area where you just can chill for the day. Equally attractive Marble beach where the bottom of the sea is visible like a marble. Trincomalee is famous for Whale Watching. Visiting Sri Pathrakali Amman Kovil is interesting. Enjoy the bay view at the Koneswaram Temple any time of the day. Snorkel at Pigeon Island is not bad either.

Afterwards check-in at the hotel and overnight stay at Habarana.

(At this Orphanage you will find over 80 elephants of all ages that have been found, abandoned or orphaned in the wild and the unique feature is that you can feed the baby elephants with milk bottles during the feeding times. You can also accompany the elephants to a river close-by and get a nice view of them enjoying their routine bath at the river)

(Visit a Herbal & Spice garden to see different kinds of spices for which Sri Lanka was and still, famous for and enlighten your-self with spices used in local cuisines. Here guests could see how some of these spices are grown and processed. Sometimes witness a Cookery demonstration or relax and enjoy a 20 minutes complimentary Ayurveda Massage. A variety of herbal plants are also grown and nurtured in the premises.)

(Habarana is a popular tourist destination for safari lovers as it is the starting point for safaris in the nearby Habarana jungle and the Minneriya sanctuary which is heavily populated by elephants. Elephant back riding is also an attraction in this small city. Habarana is situated nearby to the ancient rock fortress and castle/palace ruin of Sigiriya and is situated on the main road from Colombo to Trincomalee, Polonnaruwa and Batticaloa. The area has some of the best hotels in the country and the greenery and wild life has added value, making the location attractive for tourists. The location has some mid-range and up hotels aimed at package tourists, and is a departure point for other nearby locations of greater interest.)

Day 2

After breakfast say goodbye to Habarana and proceed to Trincomalee, en-route engage on a Safari if you wish at Minneriya National Park. Afterwards check-in at the hotel and overnight stay at Trincomalee.

(The Minneriya Forest Park was designated as a national park on 12 August 1997, having been originally declared as a wildlife sanctuary in 1938. Large numbers of Sri Lankan elephants are attracted to grass fields on the edges of the reservoir. The Minneriya tank the most picturesque tank among national parks in Sri Lanka, contributes to sustain a large herd of elephants. Individuals of elephants gathered here numbering around 150-200. In addition to elephants, shamba deer, axis deer, sloth bear and birds are some of wild animals found in the park.)

Day 3

After breakfast drive you around sight seeing in Trincomalee. The places of interest to visit are Nilawali beach, Marble beach and Trinco harbour etc. Afterwards drive back to the hotel and overnight stay at Trincomalee.

(Trincomalee is the administrative headquarters of the District and major resort port city of Eastern Province, Sri Lanka. Located on the east coast of the island overlooking the Trincomalee Harbour. The harbour is renowned for its large size and security; unlike any other in the Indian Ocean, it is accessible in all weathers to all craft. It has been described as the "finest harbour in the world" and by the British, "the most valuable colonial possession on the globe, as giving to our Indian Empire”. The famous Koneswaram temple is sacred to the Hindus and some Buddhist worshipers. Popular tourist destinations include its beaches at Uppuveli, Salli and Nilaveli, used for temple visits, surfing, scuba diving, fishing and whale watching, and the “Kanniya” seven Hot Springs in which the water is warm, the temperature of each spring being slightly different and the use of the springs for bathing is controlled.)

Day 4

After breakfast going leave Trincomalee and proceed to Polonnaruwa. In this city you can see the most historical Buddhist monuments and few Hindu temples as well. Afterwards check-in at the hotel and overnight stay at Polonnaruwa.

(Polonnaruwa holds the well preserved remains of the city which has been the capital in Sri Lanka from the 11th to the 13th centuries, a relatively brief but glorious epoch that witnessed a flowering of Buddhist arts and architecture. “Gal Vihara” (Rock Temple) statues are four splendid statues of the Buddha in ‘Upright’, ‘Sedentary’ and ‘Recumbent’ postures carved out of rock. You will see the excavations: Temples, Dagobas, the royal palace, the royal library, majestic Parakrama Samudra (ocean) reservoir etc. Most of the ruins of Polonnaruwa are protected within a specially fenced-off archaeological site north of the modern town. Tickets to the site have to be bought from the excellent Polonnaruwa Museum, well worth a visit for its insightful displays on life in the ancient capital, and some fine exhibits including a number of superb Chola bronzes recovered from the site.)

Day 5

After breakfast leave from Polonnaruwa and proceed to Sigiriya. At Sigiriya you have the choice of visiting either Sigiriya Lion‘s Rock, Pidurangala Rock or Dambulla Cave Temple. All are interesting and worth watching but depends on time you have. Afterwards check-in at the hotel and overnight stay at Sigiriya.

(Sigiriya is an ancient 5th century rock fortress refers to a site of historical and archaeological significance (UNESCO listed World Heritage Site) that is dominated by a massive column of rock nearly 200 meters high, citadel of unusual beauty. The palace is on the top of this rock and decorated its sides with colorful frescoes of the ‘Heavenly Maidens’ of Sigiriya. On a small plateau about halfway up the side of this rock he built a gateway in the form of an enormous lion. The name of this place is derived from this structure “Sihagiri”, the Lion Rock. A moat, rampart, and extensive gardens including the renowned water gardens spring the base of the rock. It is one of the best preserved examples of ancient urban planning. It is the most visited historic site in Sri Lanka.)

(A massive rock formation almost directly opposite Sigiriya, Pidurangala has an equally majestic view as the former of rolling lake-and-land vistas. Short of viewing it through drone footage, the widespread summit of Pidurangala is also the best possible place to get an eyeful the rock fortress itself. It's not merely all about stunning views though: Pidu isn't just another nameless rock, it has its own little history and back-stories. Other than just being a climbable rock which is nearly the same height as Sigiriya, Pidurangala was also a meditative retreat for monks. The hill is peppered with caves and little cells which were allegedly used by them. It's said that when King ‘Kasyapa’ built the Sigiriya rock fortress, he relocated the monks there to Pidurangala, and then refurbished and expanded the monastery under his patronage.)

(Dambulla marks the geographical centre of the island and the Cultural Triangle. It also holds its own treasure a magnificent temple, which is a series of five caves established as a monastery in the 3rd Century BC. These caves, built at the base of a 150m high rock during the Anuradhapura (1st Century BC to 993 AD) and Polonnaruwa times (1073 to 1250), are by far the most impressive of the many cave temples found in Sri Lanka. The statues of Buddha and Hindu deities and rock paintings inside the cave are no match to any other on earth done at that era. Access is along the gentle slope of the Dambulla Rock, offering a panoramic view of the surrounding flat lands, which includes the rock fortress Sigiriya, 19 kms away and the golden Buddha statue at the foot of the rock. Families of friendly monkeys make the climb even more interesting. Dusk brings hundreds of swooping swallows to the cave entrance.)

Day 6

After breakfast leave from Sigiriya and proceed to Colombo Bandaranayaka International Airport departure terminal. On the way if time permits you can enjoy a bicycle or bullock cart tour to a Rural Village or Wild Safari.

(The early part of the century, transportation of goods & people were done by bullock carts. Get a bullock cart & start experiencing the real traditional Sri Lankan rural village life style. Thereafter you will be provided a special traditional canoe & cross the natural lake, then walk to rural village in the jungle. Warmly welcomed & they will serve you natural herbal drink with jaggery. Get experience about traditional cooking method, climb the tree house & observe surrounding, the wild animals, visit to a paddy field to see how the traditional local farmers protect their crops from the wild animals. From the village kitchen, they will provide traditional lunch using organic vegetables and Rice with natural lake fish.)
