Tour Description

The island of Sri Lanka, ‘the wonder of Asia’, is one of the most exotic getaways in the world. Be it any kind of holiday trip or tour, the paradise of the Indian ocean has much to offer than one can dream of. It is a 365-day sunny destination with eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites, fifteen national parks showcasing spectacular wildlife. This tour mainly focusses on

Arugam Bay.  “Bay of Cynodon dactylon” is situated on the Indian Ocean, in the dry zone of Sri Lanka’s southeast coast, and a historic settlement of the ancient Batticaloa Territory. The bay is located, 320 Kms due east of Colombo, and approximately 4 Kms south of the market town of Pottuvil. The main settlement is Muslim, however there is a significant Sri Lankan Tamil and Sinhala population to the south of the village, as well as a number of international migrants, largely from Europe and Australia. While traditional fishing has dominated the local economy, tourism has grown rapidly in the area in recent years. Tourism in Arugam Bay is dominated by surf tourism, thanks to several quality breaks in the area, however tourists are also attracted by the local beaches, lagoons, historic temples and the nearby Kumana National Park.

Arugam Bay’s Main Point is known for its sweeping (400m – 600m) right hand point break; the headland is oriented perfectly to receive the South-South-East swell and holds best between 3ft – 8ft. As the wave is situated at the top of this head land there is no protection from any cross winds during the season. Recommended for intermediate to advanced surfers, this wave can get pretty gnarly on low tide and big swells; keep in mind the reef it rolls over. This is the spot where Sri Lanka’s only international surf competition is held. It’s only a 5-minute walk from Hideaway. Can get crowded. Food and drinks available at Beach Surf Cafes. Tuk-tuk and surf lessons can easily be arranged upon request. Surf boards are available for hire and sale too.

Those hatcheries pay local fishermen or poachers for eggs that they collect at night along the sandy beach. There is a instructor who will explain all in detail.
